JUNIOR AWAY DAY.
This was held at Trethorne
Golf Club last week and once again was a great success. We took 21
juniors and 7 adults, making 7 teams of 4. Trethorne made us very
welcome – bacon baps on arrival and a good meal to end the day.
Whilst most teams struggled with the blind holes, the wind and the
rain, 2 teams managed to make to all look very easy. Rob’s team of
James T, Jonny and Tom Kilsby scored 96 points, but Ben’s team of
Ryan, Sam and Robbie T took first place easily with a very
suspicious 102 points! I think a steward’s enquiry was called for!
Many thanks once again to
Sally for providing the 2 minibuses – without them this day would
not happen. Thanks also to Ben & Tom for giving up their day off to
come with us – their presence was much appreciated by all. Also to
Keith, Keith and Steve for sacrificing a day’s work to play golf!!!!

COUNTY AUTUMN MEETING
Played at Tavistock on
Monday and we had a great turnout of 10 players – well done! That
number of entrants reflects well on our Junior Section.
Unfortunately, although
mainly dry, it was a very windy day so returned scores reflected
these conditions. George Horsham came 3rd in the first
division after the Scratch prize winners had been taken out and
Emily Davies won the girl’s Scratch prize. Well done to you both!
JUNIOR GIRLS INTER COUNTY MATCHPLAY
Both Emily and Molly were
selected to represent Devon, playing against Gloucestershire,
Cornwall and Wiltshire at Chippenham. All three matches were close,
but Devon could only manage 3rd position. Next year, all
6 counties in the SW area will be playing over 3 days at Honiton.
JUNIOR SDL
With the last fixture scheduled to be
played on Sunday 5th Sept at Teignmouth, we are 5½ points
behind the leaders, Stover. However, the team are confident that
they can make up this deficit if they all play well on the day. They
are 18 points ahead of 3rd place Dainton so Torquay and
Stover have been left to fight over the honours! The team have all
played steadily in all the other fixtures so we need one more good
performance….

Robbie wins a day with Lee Westwood!
During
August, four Torquay Golf Club juniors, Dillon Brown, Jordan Mayne
and Robbie and James Thompson were invited to a 3 day Lee Westwood
Golf Academy at Perranporth Golf Club.
On
arrival the boys were allocated groups, depending on age and ability
and during the first two days the boys had expert coaching on every
aspect of the game of golf, such as; pitching, chipping, putting,
long game, shot shaping etc.
The final
day was skills test day with some excellent prizes to be won. Each
attendee was rigorously tested and marked accordingly on performance
and technique; the boys certainly did the golf club proud. Dillon
was fourth in his division, collecting a Ping shoe bag. James was
second in his division, winning a Ping rucksack. Jordan won his
division and received a Ping stand bag for his efforts, but the big
prize was to be Robbie’s! As the overall winner of the academy he
wins a day’s golf with Lee Westwood! As if that is not enough he
also receives a custom fitted Ping driver, Ping putter and Footjoy
shoes, accompanied by a dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls.
This amazing day will take place on August 30th at
Lindrick Golf Club, Worksop. Well Done Robbie

generously sponsored our event.

JUNIOR SDL UPDATE
After two fixtures, the juniors are doing
Torquay proud! We are heading the League by 3½ points having won the
day at Teign Valley last week. All the squad are performing well and
there seems to be great team spirit amongst them all.
Keep it up, guys – only 5 more fixtures
to go!!

MOLLY'S ACE!
It only took 14 year old Molly Haslam a six iron,
which pitched onto the front of the 138 yard par 3 second hole and
rolled straight into the hole to secure her first hole in one at
Torquay Golf Club.
Molly, now playing off a handicap of 13,
also qualified for the
EWGA Abraham Trophy
earlier this year and is one of the
many up and coming players in Torquay's Junior Section.

Juniors
score well in Millennium Cup
The juniors put up a good showing in the cup played on Bank Holiday
Monday. Harry Thorne was the overall winner with a net score of 64,
reducing his handicap to 5, and Dan Nie won the Scratch prize with a
71 gross. In Division 1, Robbie Thompson came 2nd with a net 67, and
in Division 3, Dillon Brown came 2nd, also with a net 67.
In the previous weeks’ competition, the Grey Cup, Nathan Gilpin shot
a gross 70 net 64, earning him an overall 3rd position and his
handicap reduced to 5. The junior section now has 3 (4, counting Dan
Nie whose home club is Churston) category 1 players – a great target
for those juniors still to reach their full potential!
