Torquay Juniors Win Regional Final

As winners of the Junior South Devon League Torquay’s Juniors went on to compete in the regional finals of the Junior Team Golf Inter-Club Championships held at Trethorne.

They competed against three other clubs, Ferndown, Carlyon Bay and Cumberwell Park.

An interesting competition with each club fielding a team of six players.1 gross score and 4 net scores counted for the overall total for each club and Torquay came out on top.

Played in testing conditions the juniors held their nerve to play a difficult course.

They now progress to the national finals to be held in Essex on 24 October, competing against 9 other teams from across the country. The winning team goes on to represent England in the Home Nations final in Spain.

With five single figure handicappers in the team no one would bet against Torquay going the distance.

Junior South Devon League -
The last fixture is imminent and the big question is can Torquay hold their lead of 3 points over Stover and make 2011 our winning year.

All the South Devon Clubs all convene next at Teignmouth on Sunday 4th September and although we are missing Nathan as he is in America, we have selected a strong team.

Stover will be determined to outscore us and make up the difference in points, but we are equally determined to hold on to our lead!

The new format has proved popular with all the players and so far our team selection has been good – just fingers crossed we can get it right one more time.

Basil Steer Trophy
The team managed to get to the semi-finals this year – a great achievement. Our opponents were Stover and the venue Churston. The 3 team members of Stover are in their last year of the junior section and so experienced in matchplay and the pressures of winning, and we fielded a relatively young side, especially with Nathan being absent. However, Robbie, Molly and Will put up an excellent fight, losing 2 games to 1, with the 2 losing games going to the 18th, so a very close result.

 Junior Open Report – 29th July 2011

Wonderful weather and course magnificent - what more could we ask for. Some fantastic scores were returned from all divisions seeing many handicap reductions. We were doubtful a few weeks before the event that we would actually have enough entrants to run the day, but all was well in the end. Overall we had 63 players, 20 more than last year and we even had 15 of our own ‘babies’ playing.

Nathan Gilpin (Torquay) won the Best Scratch with a 67, thus reducing his handicap to 1 and Joshua Walsh from Thurlestone was runner-up with a gross 70. The best net went to Jake Dommett from Torquay with a net 64 playing off a newly acquired handicap of 27, which reduced him to 25!

Division 1 (h/caps 0 – 12) was won by Tom Ridings (Teignmouth) 80/12/68, second on countback was Sam Bealing (Teignmouth) 80/12/68, and third was  Will Farley (Torquay)  77/7/70

Division 2 (h/caps 13 -28/36) winner was Dave Harding (Torquay) 90/26/64, second was Emily Davies (Torquay) 82/17/65, third was Dan Harvey (Torquay) 94/28/66, fourth was Emily Morey (East Devon) 92/26/66, fifth was Jordan Mayne (Torquay) 91/23/68 and sixth was Dillon Brown (Torquay) 81/13/68.

The Novice 18 hole competition was won by Nathan Johnson (Torquay) with 58pts, second was Karrie Spencer (Torquay) 49pts, third was Harrison Wood (Torquay) 46pts and fourth was Jack Ireland (Torquay) 44pts.

The 9 hole Stableford competition off the blue tees was won by Rhys Hurd (Churston) 33pts, second was Eleanor Hocking (Torquay) 30pts, third Taylor Rowlands (Torquay) 29pts and fourth James Rowe (Torquay) 28pts.

Thanks to all the helpers but especially to Trevor Sparkes, Colin Nolan, and the parents and friends who walked 9 holes with the novices, also the Bar and Catering staff and all those members of the Golf Club who so generously sponsored our event.

JUNIOR SOUTH DEVON LEAGUE

Churston Sunday 29th May

Torquay Team:

1st pair Robbie Thompson & Emily Davies, 2nd pair Nathan Gilpin & James Thompson, 3rd pair Molly Haslam & Will Farley.

The first fixture was held at Churston playing a new format of 4BBB Medal. Some found the concept of the scoring a little complicated to understand but all seemed well by the end of their rounds! I think the new format was well received and there seem to be a sense of enjoyment from all players.
For the first outing we did well, coming second in group 3 and third in groups 1 & 2, amounting to 17 points which was good enough to give us 2nd place overall.
The next fixture is at Hele Park on 19th June so keep up the good work team!

COUNTY GIRLS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

Not only do we have the County Junior Champion in our midst but also the Runner-up as well!!

The Championships were held at Exeter this year with a good field of 32 girls in the main competition and 8 girls in the 9 hole competition for beginners.

Molly (left) shot a gross 80 and won the Dorothy Baldry Salver and the Championship title for 2011! She also won the Freda Abrahams Trophy for the best gross aggregate scored in the Spring Meeting and the Championships.

Emily (pictured right) scored a gross 83 to be the Championship runner-up and was also awarded the Captain’s Prize donated by the Ladies’ County Captain, Barbara Perriton.

Georgie Dommett entered the 9 hole competition but unfortunately had to withdraw after 5 holes due to an injury. Hopefully she will be in the main competition next year!

Well done to all 3 girls – the Torquay Ladies’ Section is proud of you!

Junior Captains’ Drive In.

Last Sunday saw the first Junior Competition of the season and the joint Junior Captains of Nathan Gilpin and Emily Davies  decided to do a ‘drive in’ and a fun competition in the way of a Texas Scramble. Each team of 3 or 4 consisted of a high, medium and low handicapper, and the ages spread from 17 down to 5! Even the 2 ‘babies’ of Tyler and Taylor managed to play 18 holes – what an achievement! The winning team was Nathan Gilpin, James Thompson, Josh Gagg and Taylor Rowland – well done!
