OPEN WEEK & FINALS
DAY REVIEW 2011

Torquay Golf Club Riviera Open Golf
Festival ...and the fine weather made it a most enjoyable
experience for all of the competitors (writes Coach)
The week comprised
of eight competitions of varying formats and a daily Riviera Cup
knockout competition, participated by many new and returning visitors.
On the final
Sunday the coveted 36 hole Riviera Championship gross play competition,
was won by Torquay “in form” youngster, Nathan Gilpin. His thirty-six
hole score of 136 was a superb tribute to his growing consistency.
Steve Thorne
finished in second place which showed a great power of recovery when he
played his second 18 holes in a remarkable 64 shots!
In 3rd place was
the old maestro Mark Jeffery with a gross score of 144. Best am prize
went to Club Secretary Colin Nolan with a gross score of 73 and Richard
Crook took the afternoon prize with a fine 70.
The Victory Cup, a
net score competition, was played alongside the Riviera championship and
Nathan Gilpin climbed to the top of the podium again! His 130 net score
was just 4 shots better than Mark Jeffery’s 134 with Mark Garland
finishing third on countback.

SAVAGE SALVER 29 May
Torquay welcomed a plethora of visitors to
their premier mixed open on Sunday (writes Diane Evitts).
As well as players from across the county,
Petitor also welcomed visitors from as far afield as Winchester,
Basingstoke and Leicestershire.
This being the case it was therefore fitting
that the guests should share in the prizes with, for the second year
running, non-home players lifting the Savage Salver.
Playing in the middle of the field Churston’s
Nigel and Cathy Coombe faced an anxious wait in the Clubhouse to see if
anyone would pip their net 66 in this greensomes medal. Their worries
were unfounded as their lead remained unchallenged, with visitors taking
second and fourth places.
Third place went to a golfing ‘marriage made
in heaven’ in the shape of Torquay’s Alan Bastow and Marie Scobie. This
recently formed new partnership has seen them figure in the prizes in
every mixed competition they have played in and are most definitely a
force to be reckoned with.
LADIES RIVIERA QUALIFIER
The ladies competition in this Riviera Week
was the Riviera Qualifying medal, in which the top eight qualifiers play
a knockout culminating in the final on Saturday.
With the continuing dry conditions the scene
was set for some handicap reductions, although surprisingly the
competition standard scratch rose by one to 74.
There were five reductions in handicap for
first and second places in the Silver Division, with the top three
placings in the Bronze 1 division also reducing their handicaps by one
shot.
Whilst Laura Colman didn’t shave a shot off
her handicap with third place in the Silver Division she did card the
only two of the day.
Results: Savage Salver (greensomes
medal, home players unless stated): 1st Nigel & Cathy Coombe
(Churston) net 66; 2nd Trevor & Margaret Smith (Sparkwell/Borringdon)

countback from Lennie Pym & Pam Goymour, on c/b from Trevor Gee & Val
Atkinson; 8th Chris & Sue Yeoman 69.
