GOLF & SILVER MEDALS
Steve
Thorne added to his tally of Gold Medal wins
when he notched up another one in the 2011
playing of the 36 hole scratch competition
event. Steve's morning score of 71 was followed
by a 73 (144) giving him victory by a single
point over Lennie Pym who also posted a morning
round of 71 with a second round of 74 (145).
Secretary Colin Nolan finished third in the
scratch medal on 147.
Lennie
did get great consolation in picking up the
prestigious Silver Medal with a 36 hole net 133.
A little background:
The Doners of the Field Gold and
Silver Medals resided next door to the Club in
the house which overlooks the first tee. Mr
David Field had been the philatelic advisor to
King George V and Mrs Field became, in due
course, the first Lady Mayor of Torquay. Both of
these splendid medals have always been much
sought since their conception in 1922. The Field
Gold Medal was first won by the then Secretary,
Fred Gray.
CAPTAIN'S CUP
The Captain’s Cup competition at Torquay Golf
Cup on Saturday turned out to be a close family
affair (writes Coach). Grandad Pete
Archer and grandson Liam Parker took the top two
places in a game of Happy Families.. At the end
of play Grandad Pete had finished at the top of
the leader board with 43 points but a local
rule, declaring that a maximum handicap of 18
was required to capture a major trophy, had to
be applied. Pete’s handicap of 20 was therefore
reduced by two shots allowing Liam to take top
prize with an excellent 42 Stableford points.
Making up the top three places was smooth
swinging Roddy Pym with 39 pts and it is at this
point in the narrative that the Vice Captain
normally figures in the proceedings. This time,
however, Chris Overton came up to the table
taking the Scratch prize with 33 pts.

OPEN TEAM EVENT
Whilst the Captain was basking in the sun, more
accurately ‘baking’ in the sun, Vice Captain
Steve Thorne was on hand to congratulate the
winning teams and present the prizes at this
year’s Men’s Open Team Event (writes Coach).
Sixty five teams turned out for this very
popular competition with 14 different clubs
being represented. The visiting teams were from
Lyme Regis, Oake Manor, Saunton, China Fleet,
Honiton, Dartmouth, Hele Park, Churston,
Elfordleigh, St Mellion, Yelverton, Wrangaton,
Taunton Vale and Borringdon. Forty five visitors
in total played making up almost 25% of the
field with the largest contingent being 17
players from Yelverton.
Three young men from Torquay took first prize by
a 2pt margin and in second place Richard Crook
managed to reduce the average age of his team by
quite a number of years.

JUBILEE
CUP
Saturday
at Torquay Golf Club saw Tommy Broadway grasp
hold of the King George V Jubilee Cup with both
hands when he produced a scintillating net score
of nine under par 60 (writes Coach).
Tommy joined the Club as a Junior member back in
2007 and recently rejoined through the Club’s
2011 innovative “Gateway to Golf” open day which
introduced quite a number of new members to
golf.
Tommy’s round included ten pars – a run of 7
consecutive pars from the 7th to the 13th plus a
birdie three at the last hole. Quite a
performance!
To qualify for a prize it was necessary to put
together a sub-par round and in so doing come
onto the radar of the handicap committee. This
week the group included Barry Long who must have
miscalculated on the back nine!
Jubilee Cup Winner: Tommy Broadway
Overall placings

13) 60; 2nd Rob Clarke (11 - now 10) 64;

CENTENARY
CUP
Torquay’s
field of players competing for its Centenary Cup
enjoyed a wide range of handicaps and ages (writes
Coach). In the final analysis, the winners list was
sprinkled with quite a number of proud Seniors and a
smattering of ex-police officers.
The winner of the Centenary Cup was Ernie Pryce,
the popular 2006 Seniors’ Captain; in fact it
was most fitting Ernie winning the Cup having spent
the majority of his life in the last century! This
fact in no way tarnishes the value of this splendid
win, in fact it adds great significance to the fine
achievement. To substantiate the accomplishment of
Ernie’s winning round his net 64 blew away class
golfer Colin Rowland by a whole single stroke. Star
acts Pete Jeffery, Steve Thorne and evergreen Mike
Goodrich were also in his wake.
An additional and interesting fact is that Ernie was
using Senior fellow member Mike Hutchings clubs with
a view to purchase. Let’s hope they still work when
he has paid for them.
The Centenary Cup results are as follows:
Trophy Winner: Ernie Pryce
Overall placings
1st Ernie Pryce (18 h’cap) 64; 2nd
Colin Rowland (8) 65; 3rd Pete Jeffery (10) 66;
First scratch (again) Steve Thorne,
69 (last 6).
Division 1 0-12
1st Mike Goodrich (7) 66; 2nd Nigel
Colledge (11) 66; 3rd Nathan Gilpin (2) 67.

1st Colin King (15) 68; 2nd Dave
Ewings (14) 68; 3rd Brian Balsdon (17) 68.
Division 3 18-28
1st Liam Parker (25) 55; 2nd Gary
Bullen (22) 65; 3rd Laurence Augusti (18) 67.
TGC Men’s Report
21 June 2011
Chatton Cup.
On Saturday 21 June a full field of players set off
in rather inclement weather to contest the Chatton
Cup which was presented to the Club some 91 years
ago (writes Coach). Scoring was never going to be
easy on this wet, cold and blustery midsummer’s day
but two men of outstanding quality, Neil Gayton and
Paul Monk, both accumulated a grand score of 39pts -
with Neil winning the trophy on countback. Another
player who seems to be making a habit of being in
the chase finished just 2 points behind was James
Davies with 37pts.
Steve Thorne again collected the best scratch prize
- seeing off a growing number of young players who
have been ever improving over the past few weeks.

RIVIERA WEEK
2011
Torquay Golf Club held their 2011 Riviera Open Golf
Festival and the fine weather made it a most
enjoyable experience for all of the competitors
(writes Coach)
The week comprised of eight competitions of varying
formats and a daily Riviera Cup knockout
competition, participated by many new and returning
visitors.
On the final Sunday the coveted 36 hole Riviera
Championship gross play competition, was won by
Torquay “in form” youngster, Nathan Gilpin. His
thirty-six hole score of 136 was a superb tribute to
his growing consistency.
Steve Thorne finished in second place which showed a
great power of recovery when he played his second 18
holes in a remarkable 64 shots!
In 3rd place was the old maestro Mark Jeffery with a
gross score of 144. Best am prize went to Club
Secretary Colin Nolan with a gross score of 73 and
Richard Crook took the afternoon prize with a fine
70.
The Victory Cup, a net score competition, was played
alongside the Riviera championship and Nathan Gilpin
