TORQUAY
GOLF CLUB: PRESS RELEASE
Thursday 23 February 2012
Torquay Ladies
Captain Vonnie Evan’s last social event of her year was to host the
ladies dinner where, as ever, the Petitor club showed that it knows
how to throw a good party (writes Diane Evitts).
With tribute acts
featuring Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross and One Direction, the
highlight of the evening was surely the reprise of the Two Ronnies
sketch ‘Four Candles’. It brought the house down, and aptly
illustrated the constant theme of Vonnie’s year – fun packed but
with a deep commitment to charity fundraising.
Help for Heroes was
the Ladies Captain’s chosen charity and her efforts, which were
magnificently supported by the members, raised over £6,000.
One of the most memorable
occasions of Vonnie’s year was the Help for Heroes Charity Golf Day
which was a complete sell-out.
The Club was honoured to
have sixteen servicemen participating in the event; twelve Royal
Engineers and four Royal Marines. The Marines only arrived back from
Afghanistan the day before, whilst those from 59 Commando Unit
returned to England two weeks previously after a seven month
deployment.
If evidence were needed of
the sacrifice made by the service personnel it was illustrated by
Ross Austin, of 59 Commando, Chivenor, who lost a leg due to blast
injuries sustained in Afghanistan. The care and support which he
received at Headley Court Rehabilitation Unit in Surrey enabled Ross
to return to the Army, to compete in a New York marathon and play in
Vonnie’s H4H charity day. The support of the Club’s members and
guests ensured that £4,032 was raised for the charity on this event
alone.
And so as Vonnie’s year
draws to a close she can look back on many happy memories, of a job
well done and of giving a little back to those who had given so much
to the country on our behalf.
LAND DRAINAGE
WORKS:
We are sure that the
majority of our members will appreciate the great improvement to the
course since the land drainage works took place during October and
November last year.
The weather
conditions throughout the project could hardly have been more
difficult but the results are already there to be seen.
(see
short video clip of the new drains at work!)
We are told that it will
take time for the new drains to work to their full potential, and
this is anticipated, the improvements however are already quite
encouraging and we look forward in the hope that the course
continues to improve for the benefit to members and ground staff.

WATCH THE GAP – IT’S ONLY 88 YEARS!
The
capacity for the great game of golf to encompass all ages was
verified at Torquay Golf Club when Norman Churchward played golf on
his 93rd birthday – the same day that 5 year old Taylor Rowland
figured in a little competition himself on Junior Open day.

NEW MEMBERS PROGRESS
Torquay Golf Club ran a very successful OPEN DAY on Sunday 10 April
and quite a number of people took advantage of the ‘trial’ 13 week
period which was on offer.
Once the Club had made a decision to organise the Open Day it was
the driving force of the Club Captain, Alex Rowe, to see it through.
A committee, to manage the logistics of accepting a possible large
influx of eager new members, was set up to ensure that the day was
beneficial to all who attended. It was of paramount importance that
each one who attended, at whatever golfing level, was accorded a
warm welcome. The committee was delighted at the response to the
adverts which were placed in the Herald Express.
Many of the new members who joined on that day have already taken to
the game, started their golfing experience by linking up with
friends at the Club with whom they were already acquainted.
Wednesday 15 June saw the first ‘New members Roll –up’ to access the
progress and enjoyment factor of new members who played less
regularly than others - and a most enjoyable evening ensued. The
Roll-up consisted of six teams, each containing 4 new members,
playing 11 holes of golf and entries are already being taken for the
next roll-up which will take place on Wednesday 6 July at 4pm.

Club Chairman Terry Steer pictured left alongside Club Captain Alex
Rowe was present to make sure that every new member was welcomed and
any questions answered. The Club Secretary Colin Nolan was also
there to share his expertise as an excellent 2 handicap golfer and
to demonstrate his aptitude when handling a camera!
