LADIES

Tuesday

10 June

Hang out the flags! Torquay ladies at last had a counting competition. After a winter which seemed to go on for ever, and many recent competitions cancelled due to the appalling weather, it was back to summer scoring with a vengeance!

There were five reductions in handicap on Tuesday although Petitor, being the course that it is, had dried out to produce very fast greens. This probably accounted for the brake on the scoring and the rise in the competition standard scratch by two to 74.

The competition itself was the rescheduled Riviera Cup qualifier (the top 14 going through to a knockout) together with an LGU medal and the Silver and Bronze Cups to play for.

Winner of the Silver Cup and the monthly medal prize of Dartington engraved glass was Sue Wood with a net 69, which also earns her a one-shot reduction in handicap to 11. Also reducing her handicap in the Silver Division was Anna Balfour with a par round of 72.

The Bronze Cup winner was Dorothy Jefferson who also won the trophy last year. She also reduces her handicap by one shot, together with Jane Gerard who is continuing her purple patch. Elaine Ewings’ net 72 also reduces her handicap.

Results: LGU Medal/Riviera qualifier/Silver & Bronze Cups: Silver division: 1st Sue Wood gross 81 (handicap 12) net 69; 2nd Anna Balfour 86 (14) 72; 3rd Chris Lester 83 (6) 77, on countback from Sheelagh Dean 89 (12).

Bronze 1: 1st Dorothy Jefferson 97 (25) 72, on countback from Jane Gerard 97 (25) on countback from Elaine Ewings 97 (25); 4th Roz Wood 102 (26) 76.

Bronze 2: 1st Helen Jones 110 (33) 77; 2nd Joan Deeley 113 (32) 81; 3rd Barbara Hele 117 (30) 87; 4th Jean Brimicombe 118 (29) 89.

Twos: Rosemarie Duffield (11th), Sue Wood (11th), Jean Parnell (11th) & Pauline Wetten (11th).

Gross prize winner Charlotte Dommett 76.

Monthly medal prize winner Sue Wood: Silver Cup winner Sue Wood; Bronze Cup winner Dorothy Jefferson.

Riviera qualifiers: Anna Balfour, Maxine Adams, Pauline Goodrich, Jan Spencer, Val Atkinson, Nicole Simonetti, Sheelagh Dean, Sally Spokes, Caroline Craig, Philippa Affleck, Lesley Rowe, Jan White, Claire Carey & Chris Lester.

The Riviera Week at Torquay Golf Club boasted a long list of competitions which members and many visitors were looking forward to immensely. The British weather, however, is not adverse to spoiling things, barbeques, garden parties or the great game of golf!

From the eight competitions scheduled throughout Torquay’s golfing festival only four events were actually completed. The rearranged dates can be found at the end of this report.

The Jubilee Cup, played in very wet and testing conditions, was the final competition for the week and some familiar names once more featured on the winners list. First place went to Steve Mayne with a superb 66 which resulted in a one shot reduction in handicap.  Nathan Gilpin finished in second place adding this to his Victory Cup win the previous week and lowering his handicap from 12 to 9.5 in the process. Steve Thorne was another very familiar name on the podium, adding the Jubilee Cup scratch prize to his Riviera Championship Cup win and the Riviera Cup Qualifier scratch prize.

Ladies

Tuesday

3 June

Torquay ladies were delighted to be back out on the golf course after a week when three out of four competitions were cancelled due to the appalling weather.

The course, however, was still showing the after affects of the deluge and was playing long and wet – hence the reintroduction of winter rules to protect the fairways.

Top of the leaderboard went to Jane Gerard who set off at a cracking pace, scoring nine points on the first three holes! Apart from a little wobble on the back nine Jane played superb golf to bring in a score of 35 points from 16 holes.

The rest of the field hovered around the 32 point mark with a countback needed to separate the top three places in the Silver Division.

Results: County Stableford: Silver division: 1st Sue Wood (handicap 12) 32 points, on countback from Elaine Johnson (20), on c/b from Diane Evitts (17); 4th Laura Arnold (13) 31.

Bronze 1: 1st Jane Gerard (25) 35; 2nd Viv Nix (24) 32; 3rd Jo Paterson (22) 30, on c/b from Sue Bradford (23).

Bronze 2: 1st Di Swift (33) 30; 2nd Rita Gibson (36) 28; 3rd Anne Haines-Nutt (35) 27; 4th Barbara Hele (30) 25.

Twos: Chris Lester (11th), Sue Wood (2nd), Jane Gerard (11th), Anne Haines-Nutt (11th) and Laura Arnold (11th).

Men's

Riviera Week

Saturday

24 May to Saturday 31 may

Torquay Golf Club’s Riviera Open Week is long established, being first held in 1924, but the contestants playing in this year’s 36-hole medal Championship Cup (Scratch) and Victory Cup (Net), set a new record.

The competition started as arranged at 8am but thick fog on the 7th and 8th holes was soon to stop play for over an hour. The hold-up rippled through the field and resulted in some players not able to start their second round until after 5pm which led to the prize giving taking place just after 10pm (writes Coach).

Visitors are always welcome at Torquay, especially during Riviera Week, and this year players entered from as far ranging as Cambridge to Cornwall. The star of Sunday’s show however was Torquay’s Steve Thorne, a man who has enjoyed many Riviera Week campaigns. Steve put together two consecutive gross 72 scores to finish with an excellent 144 total which followed the previous day’s 73 gross in the Riviera Cup Qualifier.

Winner of the Victory Cup was Junior Member Nathan Gilpin who had two superb rounds of 63 and 66 net off his 12 handicap to take first spot from Martin Powell who had a very successful day – also finishing in third place in the Championship Cup.

The Riviera Cup qualifying round, played on Saturday, was also a full field and the top six places were only separated by a single shot. The leading 32 players qualified for knockout stage and in first place was big hitting Mike Jones with 83 - 16 = 67. Also on 67 was Chris Relph who had an excellent 75 gross which included birdies on the 9th and 13th. Chris could have taken first place but for an unlikely 6 at the par 3 seventeenth which he considered was enough to protect his handicap had he not forgotten that he was playing with the Club Secretary.
